How My Story Began

Through years of smoking, I first tried hypnotherapy in my 30s and found it very helpful. However, it wasn’t until my 40s that I faced the most horrendous and traumatic situation anyone could imagine.

Over 20 years ago, I had been married for 20 years with two beautiful young children. One Saturday morning in late October, my husband took his own life. When I couldn’t find him, I asked the children where Daddy was, and they said he was in the office down the garden.

When I went down to the office, I found him.. I cannot find the words to explain what I saw or how I felt in that moment – my whole world fell apart.

The Aftermath of Trauma

In the weeks that followed, I was prescribed medication, including Temazepam and Prozac at very high doses. The doctor even discussed admitting me for care to help me cope with what had happened. But with two young children, I had to stay strong and face the unimaginable.

Although I had never been much of a drinker, I began drinking alcohol to block out the memory – the image, the pain, the shock. I experienced flashbacks and waves of sadness, anger, disbelief, guilt, and confusion.

The Struggle with Mental Health and Stigma

More than 20 years ago, there wasn’t much support available. Suicide was not openly linked to mental health, and the stigma surrounding it was even stronger than it is today.

I faced judgment and blame – people pointing fingers when all I needed was understanding. I had to protect my children and find a way to carry on, even without support.

As parents, we do what we think is right at the time, even when we’re barely holding on ourselves.

Turning to Alcohol and Seeking Help

Drinking helped to ease the pain temporarily, but I knew it wasn’t the answer. Over time, I began searching for help. I returned to my hypnotherapist, who helped me to some extent, but this trauma was far deeper than anything hypnotherapy could resolve on its own.

This wasn’t just about quitting smoking – this was about major trauma, PTSD, and addiction.

Exploring Alternative Healing and Energy Work

My search for understanding and recovery continued for years. I started exploring alternative therapies such as bio-resonance and energy healing, both of which are powerful tools that can assist with addiction, trauma, and emotional recovery.

I learned that energy can be a great healer – helping to restore balance and support those struggling with alcohol addiction, behavioural dependencies, and PTSD. These experiences inspired the holistic approach now used in my work at The One Therapy.
